For most of us on the Crandall University Hoop Classic organizing committee, our first encounters with Serge Langis were as a member of the early 90’s Mathieu Martin Matadors squads that challenged for Provincial titles. He wasn’t the player getting the most fanfare on those squads but the intensity and love for the game made him valuable, and he’s never stopped working on his own skills and especially, his basketball knowledge.

He started coaching right out of high school and he’s never stopped, coaching at every level imaginable, and literally travelling the world. Serge coached for many years at the U15, U16 and U17 levels with Basketball New Brunswick and ascended to work with Canada Basketball for many years after that. At the collegiate level, he worked at Universite de Moncton, U Maine-Presque Isle, U Maine-Fort Kent and Crandall. At the pro level, Serge coached the Moncton Miracles, Kitchener-Waterloo Titans, Bloomington Flex and the Bathurst Bears. For years, he has been co-owner of Sweat Academy, offering high level training for any athlete looking to put in the work. Serge was also brought on board by the Algerian Men’s National team, an opportunity unfortunately blocked by COVID.

And now, for his golden years, Serge has settled with his family in the Edmundston area, where he, of course, has slowed down. He only coaches a local high school and the area’s U14 team while also on the staff of a Cégep team in Rivière du Loup. The very definition of a basketball lifer, the Crandall University Hoop Classic is proud to have Serge Langis as an Honorary Chairperson.
